Description

Media news outlets are teeming with reports of sexual assault cases within the context of - and perpetrated by those protected by - larger institutions or organizations. As a result, Betrayal Theory has emerged to describe and frame the problem, emphasizing the complex aftermath, and guiding practitioners regarding clients’ presenting issues. Yet almost no one discusses appropriate interventions that match the myriad of traumatic stress responses. A one-size-fits-all intervention is likely not the best fit for institutional betrayal/sexual assault (IBSA) recovery, given each survivor’s unique circumstances and the importance of a strong trusting rapport between client and counselor. Faced with this dilemma, the presenter spent over six years developing different handouts and interventions for IBSA survivor clients to assist with their recovery journeys. This workshop will discuss various integrative, person-centered, and experiential psychotherapy techniques, provide assessment tools, and ways to build rapport while contracting for treatment. Due to the collaborative nature of the counseling work based on a survivor’s level of information for interventions, a person-centered, experiential approach for IBSA recovery may also be useful for clients of diverse backgrounds.
