This course will cover:

· Theories on dissociation & treatment

· Neurobiology of trauma

· Indicators, co-morbidity, and evaluation of childhood dissociation

· Three phase treatment model covering stabilization, trauma processing, integration/ post integration

· Caretaker’s roles in child’s recovery

· Strategies to engage various systems as partners

Clinical cases and artwork will depict how to effectively work with dissociative youth who exhibit aggression, anxiety, self-harm, soiling, eating disturbances, and a host of other co-morbidities.

Course is for mental health clinicians with training in trauma.

Fran S. Waters


Frances S. Waters, DCSW, LMSW, LMFT, is an internationally recognized trainer, consultant, and clinician in field of childhood trauma, abuse, and dissociation, and has presented extensively, in 5 continents for over 40 years.

Ms. Waters is author of Healing the Fracture Child: Diagnosing and Treating Dissociative Youth (2016) and has published many chapters and articles on childhood trauma and dissociation. She is also the author of the newly released Checklist for Trauma & Dissociation in Youth (CIT-DY) (2020).

Ms. Waters is the Past President of The International Society for the Study of Trauma & Dissociation (ISSTD) and has served on many committees with ISSD, including co-chair of Child & Adolescent Committee, co-chair of ISSTD Revised Child Dissociative Guidelines Task Force, and Faculty Director of the Child Adolescent Psychotherapy Training Programs. She also is a contributing editor for the Journal of Child & Adolescent Trauma, and Journal of Child Sexual Abuse. She serves on the national Advisory Board of the Leadership Council on Child Abuse and Interpersonal Violence.

Ms. Waters is the executive producer of two training videos, The Traumatized Child: Understanding and Parenting the Traumatized Child, and Trauma & Dissociation in Children specifically geared toward child forensic evaluators and prosecutors, for which she received the 2008 Media Award from American Professional Society on Abuse of Children.

Ms. Waters is also the recipient of the 2022 ISSTD’S Life Time Achievement Award, 2019 William Friedrich Memorial Child Sexual Abuse Research, Assessment and/or Treatment Award from The Institute on Violence, Abuse and Trauma, the 2019 ISSTD’S Cornelia B. Wilbur Award for research, training, and clinical work, the 2017 ISSTD’s Advanced Certificate in Complex Trauma & Dissociation, and the 2012 ISSTD’s Presidential Award for exemplary work as Faculty Director of ISSTD’s Child Adolescent Psychotherapy Training Institute. She is a fellow of ISSTD.

Renée Potgieter Marks works as a therapist and clinical lead at Integrate, in the North of England. Integrate has its head office in Huddersfield, with various other offices across England. Renée founded Integrate in 2006.

Renée and her team of therapists specialises in children and adolescents with attachment difficulties, complex trauma and dissociation who display significant emotional, social, and behavioural difficulties and/or are struggling with mental health problems. Most of the children which are referred has already received a variety of therapeutic input but ongoing or increasing difficulties resulted in referral to Integrate. Integrate is also the National Centre for Trauma and Dissociation for Children and Adolescents in England.

Renée is a national and international trainer as well as the founder of BICTD, providing online training for therapists on Assessment and Treatment of Children with Complex Trauma and Dissociation.

Renée regularly provides clinical supervision to multiple therapists, nationally as well as internationally and acts as supervisor and consultant for groups of therapists of different agencies in the UK.

She is chair of the Child and Adolescent Committee of the ESTD and was involved in developing the Guidelines for the Assessment and Treatment of Children and Adolescents with Dissociative Symptoms and Dissociative Disorders. She is also co-author of the book Treating Children with Dissociative Disorders: Attachment, Trauma, Theory and Practice and has published multiple chapters and articles in published academic books on the topic of therapy for children and adolescents with complex trauma and dissociation.
