Description

Reproductive trauma is often kept secret, in the shadows. Infant death is a disenfranchised loss that our society doesn’t know how to properly grieve. Worse, those that experience it often blame themselves. Pregnancy and birth complications are common, and often lead to post-traumatic stress.

Psychotherapists, psychologists, clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, clinical counselors, and perinatal mental health providers are encouraged to hear real life case studies of stillbirth, termination for medical reasons, racialized obstetric violence in the context of infertility treatment, and more. You will leave with an increased ability to discern when to apply the approaches well documented in literature as efficacious for perinatal distress (Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Approaches, Trauma-Informed Approaches) as well as those you may be less familiar with, including clinical hypnosis and strategic psychotherapy, expensive art therapy, and comedic improv.

It is possible to help your clients find healing, meaning and hope.

Learning Objectives: After this session, participants will be able to

1. Identify at least three common sources of reproductive trauma with an intersectional critique of racial disparities.

2. Explain the definition of a disenfranchised loss and its clinical ramifications in reproductive trauma.

3. Identify 2 ways to strategically apply appropriate evidenced-based approaches as well as novel approaches to reproductive trauma.
