- Short Description:
- How often do providers of abuser intervention services hear the clients ask “why wasn’t I taught this when I was younger”? So many times, the positive interventions of effective communication, recognition of emotions/feelings, and healthy patterns of interaction aren’t taught to the offender until much destruction and damage has been inflicted on others and themselves. Promoting healthy relationships and reducing relationship abuse during adolescence is an important component to breaking the inter-generational cycle of abuse. When working with adolescents however, it requires awareness of their developmental stages and being able to appeal to their learning style in order to be engaging and impact changes in thoughts, feelings and behaviors for long-term benefit. This workshop will review the research and brain science on how to engage effectively with adolescents and enhance relational connectedness through inquiry-based learning strategies.

It gathered electronically published court opinions from across the country during a ten-year period, and coded which parties alleged abuse or alienation, what judges believed, and what judges did regarding custody. Cases were broken down by types of abuse alleged and whether parental alienation was claimed. Findings regarding courts' skepticism of abuse allegations by mothers, the power of alienation cross-claims, and gender bias will be reported.

However, faith leaders and religious communities often have little training on how to respond to abuse and are unprepared for these conversations. This presentation will review research statistics on clergy response and then discuss ways to engage with faith leaders, encourage them to create safer faith communities, and collaborate for the benefit of victims and survivors. We will discuss cultivating and nurturing connections with faith communities, the ethical integration of faith and practice, how to approach the topic of domestic violence policy in congregations, and how survivor spirituality can help empower healing and hope.

- Short Description:
- Proving child sexual abuse is challenging due to the lack of physical evidence, making a child’s disclosures the most compelling evidence. However, these disclosures are often dismissed for reasons unsupported by modern science, such as inconsistencies in the child's statements or claims of coaching. Additionally, a child may provide details that appear to contradict the timeline, like the accused having an alibi, or include fantastical elements, such as being rescued by a dog. A child may also later recant their statement. These issues can lead Child Protective Services (CPS) investigators to dismiss the abuse, which in turn affects law enforcement decisions and custody rulings. It's crucial to understand the science behind abuse, disclosures, and forensic interviews to properly assess cases. This presentation will explore these scientific aspects and provide real-world examples where abuse was dismissed despite evidence indicating otherwise.

- Over the years, we have been building towards monumental military justice reform. This year, we have never been closer. Both the House and the Senate have introduced bold pieces of legislation to amend the justice system, and DoD leadership, for the first time, is speaking in support of an overhaul. And for good reason. Sexual assault numbers peaked at 20,500 in 2018, and a recent DoD IG report just determined that 64% of military special victims cases did not have appropriately trained trial counsel (or prosecutors) assigned to them.

- Short Description:
- How many clients go through rigorous domestic violence or anger management counselling and still are abusive, or are abusive in different ways, even when they have the tools? It is valuable and necessary obviously to teach those valuable skills in therapy. Peel back the layers however, and it is imperative to go so much deeper with some very simple questions that uncover the ‘why’ of abuse, in each circumstance. We need to better unpack and examine individual choices to be abusive, very little of which is physical, but that emotional and verbal violence that so impairs and damages, and in looking at the ‘why,’ better understand individual choices. In doing so, we may tailor treatment to the many different kinds of abuse, and personalities, rather than using one blanket approach which makes that perhaps egregious assumption that all violence is based on lack of skills and not a desire to hurt.
